It all came down to this. After twelve weeks of intense dance training, new routines and friendly competition, the final of Strictly Come Dancing was upon us.
The show began with an action-packed routine, before the spectacular night of dances got underway.
Firstly, Alexandra and Gorka performed the judges’ favourite dance, the American Smooth to ‘Wouldn’t It Be Lovely’ from My Fair Lady. They earned a perfect score of 40, gaining seven points from when they originally performed the dance in week three.
Next to perform were Debbie and Giovanni, who hoped that the judges choice of favourite dance would see them earn another high score. They danced the Salsa to ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, which saw them score 39.
Third to perform the judges’ choice of dance were Gemma and Aljaž, who did the Paso Doble to ‘Viva La Vida’, scoring 38.
Last to dance were Joe and Katya. The judges opted for them to perform their Viennese Waltz to ‘Somewhere My Love’ from Dr Zhivago – it clearly paid off, when they scored 39.
Then, it was time for the Showdances – and it was back to Alexandra and Gorka. They performed their routine to ‘There’s No Business Like Showbusiness’ and scored 39.
Next up and hoping to impress were Debbie and Giovanni, who danced to ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’ – earning a score of 38.
Gemma and Aljaž were third to perform their Showdance, to ‘Show Me How You Burlesque’, with the judges scoring them 37.
The last couple to take to the floor were Joe and Katya, who danced to ‘You Make My Dreams’, they scored 39.
Alexandra and Gorka then returned to perform their favourite routine of the series – and final dance, which was the Jive to ‘Proud Mary’. They yet again scored a perfect 40.
Next to dance were Debbie and Giovanni, who hoped that their Argentine Tango performance would see them be crowned the winners. They danced to ‘Por Una Cabeza’ and followed in Alexandra and Gorka’s footsteps, scoring 40.
The penultimate couple to perform, in the hope of lifting the glitterball were Gemma and Aljaž, who performed their American Smooth to ‘Downtown’. Their final dance saw them score their highest of the series, 39, but would it be enough for them to win?
The last couples’ dance of this series was from Joe and Katya, who chose the Charleston as their favourite routine. After dancing to ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’, they scored 40. A perfect way to close the series!
Before the winner was announced, there was a VT from Strictly fans from all over the UK and music from Ed Sheeran, who performed his chart-topping hit ‘Perfect’.
Then, there was a celebration of the Strictly class of 2017, before they performed their epic group finale dance. We then heard from the judges for the last time this series.
It was then the moment of truth. All of the finalists gave it their all, but it was Joe and Katya who were crowned the champions of Strictly Come Dancing 2017.
