Tonight on The Great British Bake Off it was a Bake Off first – Caramel Week!
Week Four in the tent saw the nine remaining bakers hope to impress Paul and Prue yet again.
For the Signature Challenge, the bakers had to make eighteen millionaire shortbreads, which should be equal in size; with a crumbly shortbread, a gooey but firm caramel and a thin chocolate topping. There were mixed reviews, but Liam’s Tetris-themed creation earned him his first Hollywood handshake!
This week’s Technical Challenge was set by Prue – and was to make twelve Stroopwafels. The show even brought back its historical segment for the first time this series, to talk us through the Dutch classic. All of the bakers made grainy caramel, making it hard to judge between them. Stacey managed to win round Paul and Prue to come first, whilst last week’s Star Baker Julia finished last.
The Showstopper Challenge was to make a caramel cake; which should have three layers of sponge and could hold any filling. It should have stunning decoration and, of course, include lots of caramel – including spun sugar.
In the end, it was Kate who scooped Star Baker – after Prue asked for her Showstopper recipe, whilst Tom became the fourth baker to leave the tent.
The Great British Bake Off returns next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel Four for Pudding Week.
Tom joins Jo Brand on ‘An Extra Slice’ on Thursday at 10pm on Channel Four.
